What the percentage means
The calculator first estimates how much the latest reference rate would produce. It then compares that amount with the amount you were offered.
A provider can advertise “no commission” while using a less favourable exchange rate. That shortfall is effectively a cost hidden in the rate.
Markup = (reference result − offered result) ÷ reference result × 100.
